The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) is one of the largest academic conferences in space science. This year, the meeting was held in Paris. (Top photo: A street corner in Paris.)

Each space agency set up a booth in the conference exhibition hall to explain their activities. At the JAXA booth, a fragment of asteroid Ryugu that was brought back to Earth by Hayabusa2 (the real thing!) was displayed, as well as a model of the MMX spacecraft. This year, there were many opportunities to take commemorative photos with the teams from France!

Fujimoto later greeted Christophe Venet, Director for European and International Affairs at the French Space Agency, CNES, and discussed collaboration possibilities for the MMX (Martian Moons eXploration) sample curation from Phobos.

At the CNES booth, we found a model of the MMX rover! The idea for CNES, together with the German Space Agency DLR, to develop a rover for the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission first arose during a coffee break in Berlin at a meeting to first introduce the MMX mission in Europe. It was an emotional moment for Fujimoto to take a photo with Pierre Bousquet, who was leading that meeting discussion, alongside the excellently designed model.

The Toulouse CNES team (not in Paris) have played a major role not only in the development of the MMX rover, but also the onboard instrument (the infrared spectrometer MIRS) and analysis of the flight dynamics (the orbit MMX will use to explore Phobos while in close proximity to Mars: a complex situation!). Just before the IAC, Fujimoto visited the development site with MMX Project Manager Kawakatsu Yasuhiro, to talk with CNES members. Seeing the enthusiasm of the junior researchers whose contributions are adding huge value to MMX is the best way to feel that the mission will be a success.

CNES also played a major role in NASA's Mars rover. It was great to hear directly from the people involved about their experiences. As probably everyone knows, MMX is preparing to fulfil JAXA's role in small body exploration in the global academic community, following on from the success of Hayabsua2. The mission also aims to pave the way for Japan to become a member of the Mars exploration club by returning samples from the Martian moon, Phobos.

Members of CNES Toulouse were also actively involved in the development and operation of the MASCOT lander installed on Hayabusa2. Immediately after the IAC conference, former Project Manager of Hayabusa2 Tsuda Yuichi visited and had the opportunity to express our gratitude once again.
