SOKENDAI Orientation for International Students 2024

Space and Astronautical Science, SOKENDAI (Graduate University for Advanced Studies) welcomes international students. This program aims to encourage undergraduate and graduate students living outside Japan to enter SOKENDAI and study space science and technology.
Students can experience research as well as educational activities in the field they wish during their one-month stay in Sagamihara Campus, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Period

About one month between September 2, 2024 and February 28, 2025.

Venue

Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Sagamihara Campus, Kanagawa, Japan.

Orientation Program

Students are supervised by ISAS's faculty staffs in the field the students wish. Students can experience practical studies of space science and technology and find suitable research themes/styles after they enter SOKENDAI.
They have good opportunities to promote friendship with researchers and students in the laboratory.

Language

Lectures and research discussions will be given in English and Japanese.
The students will have opportunity to learn basic Japanese language through conversation with members of the laboratory.

Transportation and Accommodation Expense

All transportation expenses from your current address to ISAS will be granted from SOKENDAI and ISAS/JAXA. Accommodation expenses will be partly granted as well.

Qualification Requirements

Those who meet all of the following conditions 1-3.

1. Undergraduate/graduate student, or non-doctorate researcher/engineer
2. Applicants should be currently living outside Japan.
3. Applicants should have intents to enter SOKENDAI in the future.
Experiences in the fields of space science and technology or related subjects are preferred.

The SO2024 committee will review all the application documents Immediately after the deadline, and decide a list of candidates (the 1st selection). The result of the 1st selection will be notified only to successful candidates by 28th June, 2024. The candidates are requested to follow "Procedure for applicants who passed the 1st selection” below.

(2) Academic transcripts

Supervisor nomination

Applicants should nominate supervisors (up to three) in the desired order in the application form. The supervisors may be chosen from the following faculty staff list. If the applicant takes interest to the specific themes for the orientation proposed by several staffs, he/she may nominate corresponding supervisors.

***CAUTION*** The nominated supervisor and research theme are not limited by the list of proposed specific themes for the program. Applicants may nominate any faculty staffs in Space and Astronautical Science, SOKENDAI as their supervisors.

Criteria for Selection

Following conditions are particularly evaluated to decide internship students.

Procedure for applicants who passed the 1st selection

The result of the 1st selection will be notified to the successful candidates by 28th June, 2024, with contact information of nominated supervisors. The candidates shall contact to them to discuss the plan during the orientation program to avoid the disagreement of the study subject, and are requested to submit the additional documents described below.

(4) A reference letter from the director/head of applicant's institution or applicant’s current supervisor is desirable. There is no designated form of the letter.
The applicants those who are in Master course are also required to submit the following additional documents, too.

Security Export Control

Depending on the specific theme for the internship, applicants may be subject to regulations on the export/transfer of controlled technologies based on the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Law.
