Advisory Committee for Space Science, Chairperson Kanako Seki
Advisory Committee for Space Engineering, Chairperson Kojiro Suzuki

The Space Science Symposium, organized by Advisory Committee for Space Science and Advisory Committee for Space Engineering, was held 23 times at the beginning of each year since 2001 as a forum for the community to actively discuss the future of space science. During this period, the way in which space science missions are conducted has also changed significantly, and space science has been promoted as part of the national space policy. Therefore, JAXA's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science has rearranged the purpose of the symposium and proposed changing the timing of the symposium to an appropriate time to discuss the future of space science.

The proposal from the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science was to rearrange the holding purpose of the space science symposium into the following two: (1) Space Science Community User's Meeting to understand the issues currently facing space science and to share how to approach the next year, and (2) as the frequency of carrying out missions is decreasing, how many researchers from many fields can participate, and by contributing to the acquisition of excellent space science results, "the creation of future missions that many researchers can enjoy" will create opportunities to carry out space science sustainably. As the most accurate timing for sharing the current situation of space science with the community, we will consider the timing of the meeting, which is not limited to the beginning of the year, based on the budget estimate request and the revision of the Basic Space Program (Schedule).

As a result of deliberating this proposal at the joint meeting for Advisory Committee for Space Science and Advisory Committee for Space Engineering held in September this year, it was judged to be appropriate as a future way of space science symposium. On the other hand, the communication of the review to the community on the holding time is delayed, and it is necessary to share the three concept proposals which are currently examined by the whole community in the process of the mission concept narrowing of the next Strategic Large Class missions scheduled in the first half of next year. Therefore, we decided to hold the 24th Space Science Symposium at the beginning of the year as usual.

As a result of discussions between Advisory Committee for Space Science and Advisory Committee for Space Engineering, and the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, it was decided to clarify its status as a "Space Science Community User's Meeting" and to hold the 24th Space Science Symposium as follows. This space science symposium is focused on sharing the concept of the Strategic Large Class missions and providing a forum to reflect opinions from the space science community in the future selection process. The detailed program will be announced on the symposium website and by e-mail, but we hope that everyone will participate actively.
