STEREO CAMPAIGN INFO

- What is meant by ghigh cadenceh?

- Will the high cadence times be posted?  How far in advance?

Hi Sabrina,

Although I havenft yet decided on some of the details (waiting on the downlink volume estimates for some programs), the overall plan is to run

C1: a 2-week high-cadence campaign of EUVI images: 3 channels @ 5min, 1 channel (most likely 171) @ 75 sec; full disk.

C2: a 4-day (TBD) high-cadence COR2 campaign (total B @2.5-min)

C3: a high-cadence HI1 campaign (20min vrs 45min cadence) but I havenft decided on the duration. We may need to run a test first to check if itfs feasible.

From these, C1 is the most relevant to Hinode/IRIS. You can get a flavor for that by looking at the EUVI movies from Jan 7-20, 2008. If you do that, youfll notice that we can run subfields at 30 sec cadence (if I recall correctly). We did this for polar plumes (patsourakos, Vourlidas et al. 2009). We can have quite a large subfield (e.g. half the disk).

We could combine that w/ a Hinode/IRIS spectroscopy study of, say, an AR close to the W limb (>40 deg) to go after magnetic connectivity to Earth/STA, especially if we have an active AR.

If this something of interest, Terry and I can design a JHOP around it. Ifd prefer a 2-3 day ability to chose, though, instead of a week but we can discuss.

FYI, there wonft be any campaigns w/ Solar Orbiter or PSP imaging but PSP is in a good location for the connectivity study.

Let me know if you have any comments

We would like to make the Heliophysics and connected communities aware of an upcoming high-telemetry period for https://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/-A/SECCHI, between July 3 - Aug 4, 2023 in conjunction with STEREO-Afs approach to the Earth-Sun line later in August. The campaign will include higher cadence, low compression EUV images and higher cadence coronagraph images. If any observatory would like to support this effort through campaign science targeting, please email mailto:gsfc-stereo@mail.nasa.gov, and we will add you to a target planning email list. We are also interested in already existing plans for compatible observations during this time period.  Target suggestions can be submitted (again to mailto:gsfc-stereo@mail.nasa.gov) and the STEREO/SECCHI team will choose some for focus during this period, to be advertised through the https://whpi.hao.ucar.edu/whpi_campaigns.php in order to enable observatories to coordinate.

General science targets and goals are:

EActive regions: The structure of complex active regions, so we are interested in data that provides information on AR magnetic fields,  temperatures, and densities.

ELow latitude coronal hole boundaries: Determining their characteristics at the Sun and how those propagate outwards into the corona and perhaps the solar wind.

ECoronal outflows/intermittency to characterize the spatial/temporal scales of small-scale structure at the origins of the solar wind. For this, we need off-limb information (imaging, spectroscopy) below about 2-3 Rsun to connect w/ the COR2 deep-field images.
