Overview

Our research spans from fundamental mechanics to engineering applications in space structures, including sounding rockets and scientific satellites. We develop mechanical metamaterials—architected structures with unconventional mechanical properties—and explore their use in next-generation space systems.

Topic 1: Wave Dynamics in Mechanical Metamaterials

Abstract

We study linear and nonlinear wave propagation in mechanical systems. Origami-based metamaterials—such as 1D chains of folded cylindrical shells—exhibit unique wave behaviors including rarefaction solitary waves that travel faster than compressive waves. These properties have direct applications in impact mitigation for spacecraft landing legs, reusable rockets, and drone protection structures.

Topic 2: Fabrication of Mechanical Metamaterials via Additive Manufacturing

Abstract

We fabricate origami-based mechanical metamaterials using metal additive manufacturing (laser powder bed fusion). By printing aluminum alloy (AlSi10Mg) prototypes, we characterize their structural performance through compression and impact testing.
