Recently, three GRBs were detected in the VHE regime with atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes MAGIC and HESS. These long-awaited results may seem to confirm the standard paradigm for the high-energy emission by GRB: efficient leptonic sources generating a bright synchrotron and a (fainter) synchrotron-self-Compton components. However, certain aspects of the signal, e.g., its spectral shape in the VHE regime, challenge the paradigm and demand for a deep revision of some fundamental elements.
