Abstract: This talk will present recent ideas for how the geophysical properties of small rubble pile asteroids can be probed by using simple surface packages. In addition to discussing the basic theory of strength and seismic measurements of rubble pile surfaces, the talk will also discuss the dynamics and modeling of packages deployed to a microgravity surface. I will mainly focus on a specific design for such an experiment, recently proposed to the Discovery mission program as the BASiX mission. However more general applications of this approach, including to the Hayabusa 2 mission, will also be discussed.
