abstract of observational proposal
The main aim is to measure chemical abundances in active regions as a function of height for 1.0 < R(Sun) < 1.6 using SOHO/CDS, Hinode/EIS, SOHO/UVCS, and to link them with in-situ measurements by Ulysses. A secondary aim is to measure electron temperatures, densities, and ionization state of the plasma as function of height from 1.0 to 1.6 solar radii using SOHO/CDS and Hinode/EIS. There have been no previous spectroscopic observations in the range 1.2 – 1.6 R(Sun).

STEREO/SECCHI
Ulysses will be ending the quadrature with SOHO. Ulysses will be at a latitude of 55 deg (south-west), in the plane of the sky. Hence any active region say between 45 and 65 degree south that might be near the limb would contribute to the solar wind measured in-situ by Ulysses.

Targets and Campaign Plan

a) If an active region is present at south latitudes during the two weeks of the campaign (7-20 May), EIS should observe at the limb for a minimum time of 4h 15m on five days during the West limb crossing.

b) If no active region is present at the South-West limb, but there is one at the South-East limb, UVCS will be pointed at this limb and five days observations with EIS would again be undertaken.

In this case, the in-situ link with Ulysses measurements would not be possible.

c) If no active regions are present at all, two days of observations (minimum 4h 15m) would be carried out at either the South-East or the South-West limb to characterise the quiescent corona.
