Special Inter-Institutional Research Fellow
The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (hereinafter referred to as "Institute") in Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has "Special Inter-Institutional Research Fellow" system as a contribution to graduate education. In this system, educational staff of the Institute provides education and guidance on specific research themes for a certain period on request from departments of graduate schools to which graduate students belong. The graduate school to which the student belongs gives credits, review dissertations, and confers degrees. However, the graduate student should be involved in research in the Institute, and research guidance for the graduate student should consist mostly of research guidance provided by educational staff of the Institute.
To contribute to graduate education, JAXA is involved in the Graduate University for Advanced Studies and interdisciplinary courses at the University of Tokyo, and cooperates with graduate education utilizing the Cooperative Graduate School system. In principle, graduate students who belong to departments of universities which the above systems are applied to cannot apply for this system.
