Boards and Committees

ISAS has a number of Boards and Committees that advise the Director-General on policy, administration, and direction of research.

Board of Councilors

This Board consists of twenty members who represent major universities and organizations associated with research at ISAS. Its function is to advise the Director-General on important policy issues and administrative matters, including the succession of the Director-General.

Advisory Council for Research and Management

This Council consists of twenty-one members of whom ten are from outside and eleven are from inside ISAS. The Director-General consults with the Council on research and management issues, including the appointment of faculty members.

Committees on Research Projects

Research projects are organized by several committees. The responsibilities of the Steering Committees for Space Science and for Space Engineering are to plan and review the research projects in the fields of space science and engineering, respectively. They discuss general programs, authorize creation of ad-hoc working groups for specific mission studies, evaluate mission proposals, select candidate missions for implementation, and review the implementation of the approved missions. Other committees take care of activities in their respective jurisdictions.
